About 2001, when I was creating the website for the RICHARDSON family of Hounslow Heath, England, I found the family of my grandfather, Arthur James RICHARDSON, in the State Records of New South Wales, Australia, Immigrant Index of 1880-1896. On Reel 2142 was recorded his family’s arrival in 1883: Edward Richardson, age 34, Emily, age 34, Florence, age 10, Arthur, age 3, and under remarks for these people was listed “and family.” Henry, age 14, and Richard, age 13, were also found, but with no remarks.
According to the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper, the sailing ship “Dallam Tower” arrived on the 1st of November, “with 419 Government immigrants.” Just recently, a Richardson cousin has sent a link to these same records that are now posted on-line as ships’ passengers on “The Dallam Tower”. There are links to the original scanned records: Edward and Emily Richardson with Florence, Arthur and Agnes.
I assume that the term “Government Immigrants” signified they were sponsored by the British government.
The image, Dallam Tower Manifest 1883, was originally uploaded by barneykin. It is posted here from Neddy’s favorites.
so amazing ,cannot believe i am researching my roots and wow ,my partner david is also a richardson ,i sent for his parents marriage certificate and it comes back with his dad as harry (bricklayer).i look for details in ancestry .com and find harry ,his dad henry, his grandfather harry and grandmother martha, was not sure so looked for more confirmation, found a link on google to this site and all that my partners mum told me about the names colclough, rosina,(my david’s sister is called rosina,he has 8 brothers and sisters)what clinches it is davids middle name is tasman. however his dad was born 17 nov 1918 so arthur was not the last child, it was ronald wilfred.thankyou very very much, my kids think i am crackers i’m sat here with tears streaming down my face lynn richardson
Harry and Rosina’s youngest child was Richard Arthur Richardson born about 1916, according to my records. Are you saying that he went by the name of Arthur Richardson?
According to my records, Rosina had a child named Ronald Richardson born after the above son, probably in Manchester, England. He is said to have died during the 1980s. Is this the same person you cite as “Ronald Wilfred Richardson” who was born 17 November 1918?
If you can scan the marriage certificate and send it to me, I will post it here, on-line.
hi edna ,
yes ronnie was born 1918 and died 1983,he married margaret hanlon in 1946, they have 9 children, raymond, rosina, richard arthur, johnny, david tasman, malcolm & margaret(twins)and veronica.the family names and their rarity make me wonder how they are not known about. i came into the family 1989.i have two children to david, (sophia and david). i am also a richardson researching my own tree who co-incidently come from the same area of manchester, not made any connections yet according to my mum my dad’s family had dealings with a butchers!, if anyone knows of a george richardson. my scanner is down at the moment, will send details asap, but if you go to the bmd index their details are RICHARDSON,RONALD W,Married HANLON,MANCHESTER vol 10e page 908 OCT/NOV/DEC 1946,

Thank you for the additional information on this family. There were five children in the Richardson family and all of them returned from Australia and South Africa to be with their mother in London, after the death of their father in Johannesburg. Of those five, only two stayed in England; youngest daughter Agnes who took care of her mother and Harry RICHARDSON who moved to Manchester. The other three very soon emigrated to Canada, including my grandfather, Arthur. Of these three, my family is the only one that ended up in the U.S.
Therefore, I knew almost nothing of cousins, aunts, uncles in England and Canada. Amongst my Richardson family here in the U.S. there was a bit of mystery about Harry RICHARDSON. No one in the family wanted to say much about him until I made contact with his grandson, Tasman Wilfred RICHARDSON. Perhaps the family was embarrassed by the divorce between him and Rosina.
When I compiled this genealogy I received information on the British and Canadian cousins from Tasman RICHARDSON of Alberta, Canada and from my great aunt Florrie in the 1950s who lived in Toronto. I added to that by perusing census records and the BMD’s, so that is how I came up with what I have.
