This is in answer to a post about the Stinson family: https://neddysnook.wordpress.com/comments-to-guestbook/#comment-14419
Kathy – I have not worked on the Stinson family for a long, long time so cannot remember how I got all the pieces together. With researching in burned counties like Buckingham, one has to look at every census record and I think that is how I saw that John and/or Archibald died and his wife became head of household. Then one of his sons, I think it was Washington Stinson, left a will in Buckingham County naming most of the siblings, if I remember correctly. The birthdates mostly came from a bible record at the Library of Virginia: “Harris, Carter, Stinson Family Bible, Buckingham County, Virginia 1805-1943″. The death record of Elizabeth Stinson is at Buckingham also, although I cannot remember if it mentioned her husband’s name or not, as she had been a widow for a long time. I have never found a marriage record for her. I gathered all of the Stinson data before there were genealogy software programs, so it has not been entered electronically yet. I hope to get to do that someday.
PS: I don’t have any record of a Sarah STINSON as a sibling, as far as I remember.
Hi,
I am looking for any information you might have on a Thomas Cary Stinson, b. 1846, d. 1904. He lived in Buckingham, VA and was married to Mary Alice Fortune.
I think he may be related to Alexander Stinson or Cary Stinson. Can you make the connection?
Thanks
Cathy
I know nothing of Thomas Cary STINSON, however he should be on the 1850 and 1860 censuses with his parents. Have you searched there? I think most of the STINSONs of Buckingham County are descended from the first Alexander STINSON.
UPDATE 15 July 2008: I have since documented Thomas Cary STINSON. See this post: HERE.
Edna:
I notice that you list your maternal Patriot ancestors and you have a link to all of them except Alexander and David Stinson. Is there a reason why they are not posted, or is it possible that you cannot prove the linkage.
It seems strange that you would list all of those Patriots and just omit one.

Larayne – I think you are referring to an old page which was a work in progress that never got fully finished and probably never will, as those old web pages were written in HTML language, and I am quite rusty with that after too many years of blogging.
A couple of years ago, I posted a completed page of my 26 patriot ancestors here: http://patriots.wordpress.com/patriots/.
I can prove every one of them with the exception of John Doland. I do not have full documentation of my ancestry to him yet. In fact, I have two more ancestors to add to that list now, which will make 28.
My husband is a descendent of Alexander Stinson, born about 1775 or before and who died in 1823 leaving four girls and five boys as orphans. We believe that he was from the Buckingham County Stinsons family. Alexander was a surveyor on the Erie canal system and settled in Montgomery-Preble Counties of Ohio. The younger children were James L. Stinson,b. 1810,Alexander C. Stinson (C.is believed to be Charles), b. 1813, and Thomas Nesbit Stinson,b. 1818 all in Preble Co.,Ohio. A fourth boy, Rueben Stinson was born in 1815 in Virginia. This was during the time of the War of 1812 when Indian activity was bad in Ohio. We feel that he was a brother based on the 1820 census and the fact that he and his family took the youngest child of James L. Stinson, Maria, after both her mother and father died. Census records confirm this fact. We would be very grateful is you could tell us where we could turn to confirm the relationship. Thank you so much. Barb Stinson
Barb, How do you connect this Alexander STINSON of Preble County, Ohio to Buckingham County, Virginia?
Many of the people in Preble County came from Virginia. We connect him through the policy of the Buckingham famility of Stinsons to name one of their children Alexander as was done in our family clear up to present days. We believe that Reuben Stinson, born in 1815, was a son and this was shown by the 1880 Census. We have found that the children of Carey Stinson seem to have similar names as those in our line, born at similar times- James , Thomas ,and Alexander, and it was often a practice to name one’s children for cousins or other family members. Thanks for any assistance.
I hope that someone here can help you find the lineage of your Alexander STINSON. When researching for him, remember not to overlook the alternative spellings for STINSON. There was an Alexander STINSON born 1776, in NC who went to Iowa, but he died much later than your Alexander. I know nothing more of him, except his marriage to Elizabeth BRADLEY which you can see here: http://www.isdar.org/chapters/elizabethross/real.html
