The latest issue of the NSDAR Magazine, May/June 2008, lists my patriot ancestors, Alexander STINSON Senior and his son David Stinson, of Buckingham County, Virginia, as new patriots of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution.
UPDATE: If anyone has comments to make about the STINSON family, please go to my blog on the STINSONS: “The Stinson Book.” Thank you.
My Grandmother”s maiden name was Stinson ….she was Minnie Frances Stinson married John Pendleton Leathers Jr they lived in Richmond,va….I know my Mother her daughter spoke of family in Buckingham…how would I research this? Thanks
Anna – The parents of Minnie Frances STINSON are documented in my Stinson genealogy book on pages 143 through 147. See this blog post for more information: http://stinsonbook.blogspot.com/2012/09/minnie-frances-stinson-of-buckingham.html
my father was Albert Thomas Stinson 1907-1972, My grandparents were John W. Stinson 1861-1920 and Alice V. Watson Stinson 1881-1920(believe we got left out of the Stinson’s of Buckinghham Co. because my Dad’s parents John and Alice both died when my dad Albert was about 13, and my daddy passed when I was 11 years old…anyways from there, my great grandparents were Joseph C. Stinson 1821-1902 and Mary Jane Watson Stinson 1823-1891, my great great grandparents were Archibald Stinson 1783-1822, and my great great great grandparents were David Stinson 1753-1823 and Anne Bryant(of powhatan co.) and my great great great great grandparents were Alexander S. Stinson and Joanna Hooper Stinson, and my great x5 grandparents were John Stinson 02/6/1696 and Mary Hogg Stinson 1703-1793… I also have all the history leading up to Anne Bryant too(her parents were Janes Bryant 1680-1772 and Elizabeth LeFevre 1700-1787 to Jacques Briand(Bryant) and Sarah Snell……………….so sorry and sad my father Albert Stinson and my grandparents John W. Stinson and Alice Watson Stinson(both died when my Daddy was about 13 in 1920- all seemed to have been lost or just left out of the Stinson’s of Buckingham Co…..I have more, and proof of what I just posted, I have pictures of my Dad Albert Stinson but would love to find one of his parent John W. Stinosn:-) Sincerely, Penny Stinson Mewhirter
Penny – Thank you for commenting. Were your parents, Albert T. and Dorothy M. STINSON, living in Richmond, Virginia? I found two records of them there. The genealogical lineage you have described above does not follow what I have presented in my family history of the STINSONs of Buckingham: “So Obscure A Person”. I suspect that the above family you posted here descend from Louisa STINSON of Buckingham County. I did not include her in my book as I am not certain of her lineage. She could be a STINSON descendant married to a STINSON, or both. If you are interested you could tackle that mystery.
Incidentally Penny, there are photographs of Dorothy Dolan and her parents at DeadFred.com. Do you know about them? “Caption: Dorothy Doland Description: From DeadFred.com: Photo #35826 Last Name: Stinson First Name : Dorothy“

thank you very much for writing me back..all I know for sure as fact, is my father is Albert Thomas Stinson(1907-1972), his parents were John W. Stinson 1861-1920 and Alice Va. Watson Stinson 1881-1920 , and I know for a fact they both died when my dad was 13(dates also match up) ****and I know my grandpa John W. Stinson was married twice, to sisters! one died and he married again to the younger sister..,..maybe that is the sticky part? (John W. Stinson, son of Joseph Stinson and Mary Jane Watson) had my dad Albert Thomas, and he had two sister,,Edna and Ressie……………have you ever heard anything of this/ or like it? just wanna know who I am.. thank you very much, and God bless..
but to follow it. Start with Dad, Albert T. Stinson. He’s listed in the 1910 census as the 3 year old son of 48 year old John W. Stinson. 77 year old Mary Stinson is also listed as living there as John’s mother. According to the 1870 census, Mary Stinson was Joseph C Stinson’s wife and they had 10 year old John Stinson living with them. This is all in Buckingham County by the way. This is where it get’s tricky to follow. Archibald Stinson was married to Mary Stinson (John Stinson’s mother). They had John 1 year before Archibald died at 37 years old. Archibald Stinson was son of David Stinson, who was the son of Alexander Stinson. Alexander Stinson was the original Stinson in the Buckingham County area. There is more on my ancestry.com page if you check it out there with other references as well.
Archibald was married to Elizabeth Stinson (not Mary). Elizabeth was Joseph Stinson’s mother. Also, this website here makes several references to Joseph Stinson being Archibald Stinson’s son. http://buckinghamstinsons.blogspot.com/
