Buckingham Norvells

The Thomas A. NORVELL who lived on Sharp’s Creek in Buckingham County, Virginia was undoubtedly a son to William NORVELL of same. According to the 1840 Buckingham County census, there were only three NORVELLS there at that time. The older William NORVELL has just one boy who would be the age of  Thomas A. NORVELL. The other two NORVELLS enumerated would be probable sons of the older William. The older William NORVELL disappears from the 1850 census, so he may have died between 1840 and 1850.

Thomas A. NORVELL and his wife Elizabeth were both counted on the 1880 census of Buckingham County. The Norvells of  Buckingham seem to have been well to do, so the older William probably left a will, but it would have burned with the courthouse in 1869. Land records after the fire show Thomas A. NORVELL, resident for life, living on 380 acres, at Sharp’s Creek (1869 Table of Land of Buckingham County, Virginia, District 2 at Buckingham Courthouse).  Thomas and Elizabeth probably married between the 1840 census and 1845, as their daughter Cornelia F. NORVELL was born about 1845.
